Experience: Jamaica, after the hurricane

Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica’s economy and logistics hard. What my visits to Kingston showed me about the people now rebuilding the country.

Last week, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica with devastating force: entire coastal towns submerged, livelihoods lost, and nearly 30% of the nation’s GDP wiped out in hours. The impact also hit the country’s logistics backbone: ports closed, vessels diverted, and airports and highways severely disrupted.

Logistics on the front line

As recovery begins, logistics companies are stepping up. American Airlines, LATAM Cargo, Virgin Atlantic, Cayman Airways, Caribbean Airlines, Copa, Air Canada, JetBlue, Aerojet and others are providing equipment for debris removal and transport for critical goods. Still, full supply-chain restoration may take weeks as infrastructure repairs advance.

Kingston

I’ve had the privilege of visiting Kingston several times, supporting customer experience projects that provided local help for customers navigating import customs challenges. Each visit revealed the island’s vibrant blend of African, European and indigenous traditions: reggae rhythms, colorful festivals and an unmistakable warmth.

What resilience looks like

That same spirit now shines again as we watch the country deal with the aftermath. From neighbors rebuilding homes to entrepreneurs reopening doors, Jamaica reminds us what true resilience looks like across Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the wake of Jamaica’s devastation, those wishing to help can support the Jamaica Red Cross relief efforts. To learn how, visit www.jamaicaredcross.org.
